Maybe the most imposrtant historical event in Italy. This race of horses is held on Piazza del Campo, the most imposrtant square of Siena, in honour of Santa Maria. Players are the representatives of the historical districts of the town ("contrade"). The palio charme is not only the race itself but the fascinating historical atmosphere made by colours, flags, costumes in Siena during that period.
