It is the most ancient Palio contest in Italy. It was institutionalized by Comune of Ferrara on 1279. The Palio of Ferrara is actually a series of races to win four palios. The races are pretty unusual. In fact there are the races of putti (young boys), putte (young girls), on donkeys and on horses. Opponents are the four districts of Ferrara with their typical colours: San Benedetto (white and light blue), San Paolo (white and black), Santa Maria in Vado (yellow and violet), Santo Spirito (yellow and green). Opponents are also four villages of the territory of Ferrara: San Luca (red and green) San Giovanni (blue and red), San Giacomo (blue and yellow) and San Giorgio (red and yellow). Before the races the city is totally involved in a huge historical parade moving to Castello degli Estensi. A spectacular competition between flag weavers and musicians are on profram as well.
