Dionysius wanted to make Syracuse bigger and richer than ever so he had a strong war vocation. For this reason he built Castello Eurialo on 402 b. C., one of the most preserved fortress of Greek period so far. This huge architecture is today completely ruined but a visitor there can really imagine the strength of the city at that time. It had walls 27 km-long and was able to hold more than 3,000 soldiers and 700 chevaliers and to make the troops easily moving inside with special tunnels still visible today.
