It is the
main square from middle age period on. It was made on 1268 because 36 buildings in that area falled down because of many fights between
Guelfi and
Ghibellini. It has a peculiar "L" shape and it is surrounded by some of the most beautiful buildings in Florence. The most important is the Palazzo della Signoria, where the governor of Firenze lived. This building, today known as
Palazzo Vecchio, was builded on 1299 and together with the Cathedral is the most famous building of the city. In the XIX century on this palace the Italian Government where settled before Rome annexion and today here is the City Hall of Florence. Palazzo vecchio on the outside has a
typical middle aged fortress look. Inside it has been decorated under the
Renaissance style. Infact. inside are wonderful halls with enchanting painting of famous artists of that period. The
Cinquecento's hall and the
little study room of Francesco I where the prince used to study and meditate really worth a visit.
In front of Palazzo Vecchio is a copy of the David by Michelangelo. Many other famous statues are anyway located around the square such as the Perseo by Benvenuto Cellini and the Ratto delle Sabine by Giambologna in the closeby Loggia della Signoria.
