Luxury Hotels in Elba Island

It's the biggest island in front of Tuscany cost (10 km from Piombino) and the third Italian island for its extension. There are 147 km of coast with several beaches and 8 villages.

On the Elba island man has lived for thousand of years. The Etruscan came here to extract iron from the island mines. Then the Romans left signs of their presence and found here the perfect marble and granite to build their monuments in Roma. The columns of the Pantheon are from the Elba island.
12,000 years ago Elba wasn't an island and was part of the coast. The island history has always been linked to what happened in the coast. There are infact the Fortezza Pisana of the XII century and the great Forte Falcone of the XVI century built by the Medici family that show how the island has always been considered part of Tuscany.
In the modern times, Elba island became famous for Napoleon exile after Austerlitz war. He lived there for one year between the 1815 and the 1816 and lived in the Palazzina dei Mulini. There is a theatre of XVII century where Paolina Bonaparte and her dames performed.
Interesting also the Museo of Napoleonic Residences with a special exhibition of the original furnishing of that time. Not so far from Portoferraio is Villa San Martino, summer residence of the French emperor.

Portoferraio is the main town of the island (11,000 citizens). Very ancient city (its name evokes the trade of iron made by Etruscans) it was entirely rebuilt by Cosimo I of Medici as a huge fort. Some other villages on the island are beautiful even for their structure and medieval narrow streets. Marciana is a rare example of this beauty. This small village is on Capanne Mount (the highest of the island) this allow the visitor also to see spectacular landscape and views. Capoliveri on the other side of the island worth a visit as well.
A visit to the Acquario dell'Elba is worth. It is one of the biggest aquarium in the Mediterranean where it is possible to see also the rare lampughe, fishes living in the very deep sea.
